The basics

What Is a Balloon Wall?

A balloon wall is a solid face of balloons, typically 6 to 10 feet across, that stands in as a backdrop.

An arch frames, a garland follows a line, and a balloon wall covers the whole surface. It's built on its own frame or grid, so it can stand in front of any wall and serve as a photo backdrop, a stage background, the wall behind a dessert table or a branded backdrop for a launch.

Square foot for square foot, nothing in balloon decor makes a bigger statement. Walls fit birthdays, weddings, grad parties, gender reveals, holiday parties and company events, and they photograph cleanly because there's no gap for the room behind to peek through.

Wall styles

Types of Balloon Walls We Build

Five ways to build a wall, each with its own look and price point.

Organic balloon walls

Mixed balloon sizes cover the entire frame for a cloud-like, layered texture. It's the fullest, most luxurious wall, so it's the one booked most for weddings, showers and milestone birthdays, and it sits at the top of the price range because it takes the most balloons.

Grid and link balloon walls

A grid wall, also called a link or quick-link wall, is built from linking balloons joined into a net, so every balloon sits in a neat row. That grid can carry a pattern: a checkerboard, stripes, a heart or a simple number. It's sharp and graphic, and it's ideal for brand and team colors, black and gold included.

Framed balloon walls

Here the balloons fill a frame with a defined outline. An arched chiara-style frame reads elegant, a square frame reads modern and a ring reads playful, so the frame does half the design work before a single balloon goes on.

Foil and mylar balloon walls

Foil walls use mylar balloons, often stars, hearts or squares in metallic finishes. They catch light, look great on camera and contain no latex, which matters for allergic guests and for hospitals, schools and venues that ban latex.

Floating and lighted balloon walls

A floating wall uses rows of helium balloons on ribbons, so it sways gently in the room. It's striking but only lasts a few hours. Lighted walls add LED strings or LED balloons for evening parties and New Year's Eve.

Balloon Wall Sizes and Balloon Counts

Pick a size based on the photo you're after. Six to eight people fit comfortably in front of an 8×8 ft wall.

Uses

Ways to Use a Balloon Wall

A wall earns its floor space because it does more than one job.

Photo wall

The selfie and group-shot spot. Add a name panel or a light-up sign and guests will queue for it.

Cake and dessert table backdrop

A wall behind the table keeps photos clean and hides whatever's back there, from a hall kitchen pass-through to a stack of chairs.

Stage and head-table background

For toasts, DJs, award nights and wedding head tables.

Branded backdrop

A grid wall in company colors, with a logo panel, for launches, galas and convention booths.

Room divider

Hide the hall kitchen, a bar setup or a corner full of stacked chairs.

Gender reveal wall

A neutral wall with a pop-out reveal panel, or a wall that turns pink or blue on the reveal side.

Occasions

Balloon Walls for Birthdays, Weddings, Grad Parties and Holidays

These are the events we build walls for most often.

  • Birthdays: walls for kids' parties and 18th, 21st and 30th birthdays, often with a number or name set into the wall.
  • Weddings and bridal showers: organic walls in ivory, blush and white at the reception entrance or behind the head table.
  • Graduations and prom: grid walls in school colors with the class year, and glam walls for pre-dance prom photos.
  • Bar and bat mitzvahs: walls in the honoree's colors for the photo line and the dance-floor stage.
  • Baby showers and gender reveals: pastel walls for showers, and a neutral wall that gives away the answer at the reveal.
  • Game days: black-and-gold grid walls for football Sundays, playoff watch parties and team banquets.
  • Christmas and New Year's Eve: red, green and gold walls for holiday parties; black, gold and silver chrome for the countdown.
  • Corporate events: branded walls for openings, galas, conferences and Downtown office holiday parties.

Installation

How We Set Up a Balloon Wall Without Marking Your Walls

The short version: nothing gets attached to your walls.

Every wall we build stands on its own weighted frame. At home, that keeps tape and glue dots off your paint and old plaster. At venues, it keeps you inside the rules, since most hotel ballrooms, church halls and fire halls don't allow tape, nails or adhesive on their walls. A freestanding wall can also shift a few feet on the day if the layout changes.

  1. 1

    Measure

We confirm the wall size, the ceiling height (drop ceilings and low basement beams included), outlets for lights and the route from the curb to the spot, steps and all.

  2. 2

    Build

Big walls are built in panels, carried in and joined on-site, then fluffed until the seams disappear.

  3. 3

    Finish

Name panels, foil accents and lights go on last, then we check the wall from wherever the photos will be taken.

What's the best way to hang balloons on a wall? Don't hang them on the wall at all: set them on a frame in front of it. If you must hang balloons directly, use removable hooks and fishing line rather than tape, and test the adhesive on a hidden spot first, especially on older plaster.

Longevity

How Long Do Balloon Walls Last?

Air-filled walls last several days indoors. Floating helium walls last a few hours.

An air-filled organic or grid wall at room temperature keeps its shape for several days and often a full week, and foil walls last longer still. Helium floating walls begin to droop within hours. Outside, keep the wall in shade and build it the same day: summer sun clouds latex quickly, and in winter the cold shrinks balloons and opens visible gaps in a grid.

Questions

Balloon Walls in Pittsburgh: FAQ

What is a balloon wall?

A balloon wall is a solid, freestanding face of balloons, usually 6 to 10 feet wide, used as a photo backdrop, a stage background or the wall behind a dessert table. It can be organic, grid-style, framed or foil.

How much does a balloon wall cost?

Our foil walls start at $95 for 8×5 ft, grid walls at $360 and organic walls at $525 for 8×8 ft. Size, style and extras set the final price.

How long do balloon walls last?

Several days indoors when air-filled, often a week, and foil walls last longer. Helium floating walls last a few hours, and outdoor walls in summer sun or winter cold last only hours.

What size balloon wall do I need?

Most hosts choose 8×8 ft, which fits a group shot or a cake table. Go 6×6 ft for small rooms and couples, and 8×10 ft or a custom width for stages and head tables. In halls with drop ceilings, measure the clearance before you decide.

Will a balloon wall damage my walls?

No. Our walls stand on weighted frames in front of your wall, so no tape, nails or glue ever touch paint or plaster.

What is it called when balloons are linked into a wall?

A grid wall or link wall. Linking balloons connect into a net, which lets you build rows, patterns, numbers and logos.

Can a balloon wall be latex-free?

Yes. Foil (mylar) walls contain no latex, so they're the right pick for allergic guests and for hospitals, schools and venues that don't allow latex.

Can you put a name or logo on a balloon wall?

Yes. A name goes on a vinyl panel or a light-up sign, and a logo goes on a panel set into the wall or gets built into a grid wall in brand colors.
