The basics

What Is a Balloon Garland?

A balloon garland is a bendable run of balloon clusters that can follow almost any line in a room.

Think of a garland as a rope of balloon clusters built along a strip, so it bends wherever you need it. It can climb a door frame, drape across a mantel, wind down a banister, skirt a cake table or curve over a backdrop. Put it on a frame and it becomes a balloon arch; bend it into a ring and it's a hoop. That range is why garlands are the piece home hosts book most.

Because garlands are priced per foot, budgeting is simple: measure the mantel, door or table, and you'll have a good sense of the cost before you ever ask us for a quote.

Organic vs. classic

Organic Balloon Garlands vs. Classic Garlands

Nearly every garland we build now is organic. Here's the difference, and when classic is still the better pick.

What does organic balloon garland mean?

Organic means the garland mixes balloon sizes, from 5-inch fillers up to 16- to 24-inch statement balloons, in uneven clusters. The result looks full and natural rather than repeated, with depth you can see in photos. It reads as decor someone designed, not a strand pulled off a party-store shelf.

What is the difference between an organic and a regular balloon garland?

A regular, or classic, garland repeats one cluster of same-size balloons in a tidy pattern, like a twisted rope or a spiral. It's symmetrical and uses fewer balloons. Organic garlands are looser and fuller and take more balloons per foot. Classic suits school colors, team colors and clean corporate looks; organic is the pick for showers, weddings, birthdays and anything built for photos.

Balloon garland clusters and accents

Each garland is built from small clusters of three or four balloons. What you tuck into those clusters changes the look completely: chrome or pearl balloons, double-stuffed balloons in custom shades, foil stars and hearts, and confetti-filled balloons.

Placement

Where Balloon Garlands Work Best

If it has an edge, a rail or a frame, a garland can probably go on it.

Front doors and doorways

Around the front door, a porch entry, a patio slider or a hall entrance, a garland greets guests and points them to the party.

Fireplace mantels

A mantel garland is the quickest way to dress a living room for a birthday, a holiday or a shower, and plenty of older Pittsburgh homes have a mantel worth showing off.

Staircases and banisters

A garland running down the banister sets up a grand entrance for sweet 16s, engagement parties and bar and bat mitzvahs.

Cake, dessert and cookie tables

Draped along the front edge or laid down the middle, a garland frames the cake for photos and gives a wedding cookie table the attention it deserves.

Backdrops and shimmer walls

A garland sweeping over a panel, shimmer wall or flower wall is the photo spot we're asked to build most.

Walls, fences and easels

Garlands hang on interior walls, backyard fences, deck railings and easels holding a welcome sign or a senior photo.

Marquee letters and numbers

Wrapped around light-up marquee letters or numbers, a garland spells out a name, an age or a class year.

Storefronts and offices

Across a shop window, a reception desk or an office lobby for openings, sales events and staff celebrations.

Sizing

How Long Should a Balloon Garland Be?

Measure the spot, then add a bit. A garland looks best when it spills past the edges rather than stopping short.

Garland lengths and approximate balloon counts
LengthFitsBalloons (organic, approx.)
5–6 ftA cake table, a small mantel or one accent spot60–110
8 ftA 6 ft banquet table with drop, or a long mantel100–145
10 ftOne doorway or front door, or a 7 ft backdrop120–180
12–15 ftDouble doors, a backdrop combo, a buffet or cookie table150–270
20 ft and longerBanisters, long walls, stages or a full arch240–360+

Counts are estimates: organic garlands use roughly 12–18 balloons per foot, and fuller designs or bigger balloons raise the number.

How many balloons are in a 20 ft garland? Roughly 240–360 for an organic garland. A classic garland of 11-inch balloons needs closer to 100–130 over the same length.

Styles

Garland Styles: Florals, Greenery, Chrome and Mini Garlands

Start with the garland, then finish it to suit the event.

Balloon garlands with flowers and greenery

Silk or fresh blooms, eucalyptus, ferns, pampas and trailing greenery woven into the clusters push a garland toward floral design. It's the go-to for bridal showers, christenings, garden parties and Mother's Day.

Pearl, chrome and metallic garlands

Pearl balloons have a soft satin glow; chrome balloons are mirror-bright gold, silver, rose gold and champagne. A few in each cluster make the whole garland look richer, and an all-chrome black-and-gold garland is a natural fit for New Year's Eve and big-game parties.

Mini and small balloon garlands

Built mostly from 5-inch balloons, a mini garland stays delicate enough for a cake table, a high chair at a first birthday, a mirror or a bar cart in a small apartment.

Hanging and ceiling garlands

Garlands can also go overhead, swagged across a ceiling, over a dance floor or around a tent frame. Those are rigged to the venue, so we plan them as custom balloon installations.

Pricing

How Much Does a Balloon Garland Cost in Pittsburgh?

We price garlands per foot. Here's where each level starts and what changes it.

Balloon garland starting prices
GarlandStarting at
Accent garland (lighter, fewer big balloons)$20 per foot
Standard organic garland$26 per foot
Deluxe garland (fuller, with chrome, foil or florals)$36 per foot
Grab-and-go garland, 5 ft (you pick it up and hang it)$90
Grab-and-go garland, 8 ft$130

Installed garlands have a 6 ft minimum and include delivery and hanging within about 30 miles of Downtown.

What changes the price: the length, how full it is, how many large, chrome or double-stuffed balloons go in, florals and foil accents, whether we hang it or you pick it up, and the drive. A 10 ft standard organic garland hung in your home starts around $260, and every quote is written for your event.

Your options

Grab-and-Go Garlands vs. Installed Garlands

Both work well. The right one depends on the length and how much hanging you want to do.

What is a grab-and-go balloon garland? It's a garland we build ahead, usually 5 to 8 feet long, that you pick up and hang yourself. It's the budget option for small spaces. Anything much over 8 feet won't ride well in a car, and in winter the cold shrinks balloons on the drive home, so longer garlands are installed.

Timing

How Long Garlands Last and How Early We Can Build Them

Indoors, an air-filled garland lasts for days, so timing is rarely a problem.

How long do balloon garlands last? Air-filled and indoors at room temperature, an organic garland stays full for several days and often a week or more before it softens. Outdoors in mild shade it lasts about a day. In direct July sun, expect a few hours before balloons cloud over and pop, and on a frozen January porch, expect them to shrink and turn brittle.

How early can a balloon garland be made? For indoor parties, a day or two ahead with no visible difference. Most hosts have it hung the night before or the morning of. For outdoor parties, put it up the same day, as near to start time as you can, in summer and winter alike.

Questions

Balloon Garlands in Pittsburgh: FAQ

What is a balloon garland?

A balloon garland is a flexible run of clustered balloons that can hang over doors, along mantels and banisters, across tables or around backdrops. Built over a frame, it becomes a balloon arch.

How much do balloon garlands cost in Pittsburgh?

We price garlands per foot. Installed garlands start at $20 per foot for an accent garland and $26 per foot for a standard organic garland, with a 6 ft minimum. Grab-and-go garlands start at $90.

How long do balloon garlands last?

Several days indoors when air-filled, often a week or more. About a day outdoors in mild shade, a few hours in hot summer sun, and less than that on a below-freezing porch.

How many balloons are in a 20 ft garland?

At 12–18 balloons per foot, an organic 20 ft garland takes about 240–360. Built classic-style with 11-inch balloons, the same length takes about 100–130.

What is the difference between an organic and a regular balloon garland?

Organic garlands mix balloon sizes in loose clusters for a full, textured look. Regular garlands repeat same-size clusters in a tight, even pattern and use fewer balloons.

How early in advance can a balloon garland be made?

One to two days ahead for indoor events, with no visible change. Outdoor garlands should go up the day of the party in any season.

Can you hang a balloon garland without damaging the wall?

Yes. We use freestanding frames, tension rods, removable hooks or existing fixtures instead of tape that lifts paint. Church halls, fire halls and hotel ballrooms usually ban tape anyway, so frames are standard there.

Can a garland go around a wedding cookie table?

Yes. A garland along the front edge or curved over the cookie table turns it into a photo spot, and we keep the balloons clear of the trays so guests can still fill their boxes.

Are balloon garlands still in style?

Yes. Mixed-size organic garlands with florals and chrome touches are what hosts want now for showers, weddings, birthdays and holidays, in softer colors and with more texture than a few years back.

What can I use instead of a balloon garland?

Fabric swags, paper flowers, a greenery garland or a shimmer wall. Plenty of hosts pair a shimmer or flower wall with a short balloon garland to get both.
