The basics

What Is a Balloon Backdrop?

A balloon backdrop pairs a solid background with balloons, giving you a styled photo spot instead of a blank wall.

Every balloon backdrop has two parts. The surface comes first: a painted or printed panel, a shimmer wall, a flower or boxwood wall, or fabric drape. Then a balloon garland goes over or around it. The surface gives photos a clean field of color, and the balloons add shape, depth and personality. Add a name in vinyl or marquee numbers and it becomes the center of the party.

Arches and backdrops usually travel together: an arch or garland to frame, and a backdrop behind it to fill. If you'd rather have balloons covering the whole surface, that's a balloon wall.

Backdrop styles

Balloon Backdrop Styles

The backdrop's shape sets the tone before the first balloon goes on.

Round backdrops and balloon hoops

A round panel with a garland sweeping across one side is the backdrop we build most for birthdays and showers. A balloon hoop is the open version: a metal ring with balloons and florals around part of it, so the room shows through the middle. Hoops suit weddings and engagement parties for exactly that reason.

Chiara (arched) backdrops

Chiara panels are tall boards with rounded tops, used alone or in sets of two or three at staggered heights. They look elegant and current and give a garland a graceful line to follow. Angle a second chiara beside the first and the setup wraps around the cake table.

Square and panel backdrops

A square backdrop uses a rectangular panel, usually with a garland climbing one side and running across the top. Three panels side by side, in different heights or colors, make a wide backdrop for a long dessert or cookie table.

Shimmer walls with balloons

A shimmer (sequin) wall is a grid of metallic discs that ripple and flash as the air moves. Paired with a matching or contrasting garland, it glows in photos, especially in an evening reception room.

Flower, greenery and grass wall backdrops

Silk flower walls, greenery walls and boxwood or grass walls bring a garden feel indoors. A balloon garland across a flower wall is a favorite for bridal showers, christenings and Mother's Day.

Draped and curtain backdrops

Fabric drape suits weddings, galas and school events that need a wide, soft background, and string lights behind sheer drape add a glow after dark.

Balloon arch backdrops and photo booths

An arch set in front of a solid board, or built into it, doubles as a photo booth backdrop. Put a ring light or a photo booth in front and the backdrop lands in every picture.

Add-ons

Backdrop Add-Ons: Names, Marquee Letters, Lights and Pedestals

The add-ons make a backdrop personal, and they're what guests remember in the photos.

Light-up signs

A glowing script sign for a birthday, a shower or a couple's name, hung on the panel or inside a hoop.

Custom vinyl

A name, age, date or monogram cut in vinyl and applied to the panel in your color.

Marquee letters and numbers

Light-up letters and numbers, 3 to 4 feet tall, set in front of the backdrop and often wrapped in garland.

Pedestals and cake stands

Cylinders and plinths at the front for the cake, cupcakes, cookies and gifts.

Balloon columns

Balloon columns on both sides for a wider, grander setup.

Floor clusters

Balloon clusters and a few clear bubble balloons gathered at the foot of the backdrop to ground it.

Sizing

Balloon Backdrop Sizes: How Much Room You Need

Most backdrops are 6 to 8 feet wide. Leave space in front for the table and whoever's taking the photos.

Backdrop sizes and the floor space to plan
BackdropSizeFloor space to plan
Single round or chiara panel6–7.5 ft tallAbout 8 ft wide by 6 ft deep
Shimmer wall4×7 to 8×8 ftIts width plus 2 ft per side for garland
Panel trioAbout 8–10 ft wideAbout 12 ft wide by 7 ft deep
10×10 ft backdrop10 ft wide, 10 ft tallAbout 12 ft wide; check the ceiling

A 10×10 ft backdrop needs a ceiling around 11 ft or higher. That rules out most living rooms and many halls with drop ceilings, so it's best for ballrooms, gyms and outdoor setups.

Occasions

Balloon Backdrops for Grad Parties, Birthdays, Weddings and Holidays

The backdrop is usually the main photo spot, so we plan it around the guest of honor.

  • Graduation backdrops: school colors, the class year in marquee numbers and a senior portrait on an easel, for grad parties from late May through June.
  • Birthday backdrops: first birthdays, 21sts and 50ths, character themes for kids and glam setups for adults.
  • Wedding, engagement and bridal shower backdrops: hoops, chiara trios and flower walls in white, nude and blush, plus a backdrop behind the cookie table.
  • Gender reveal and sprinkle backdrops: neutral setups with a reveal moment, or pastels for showers.
  • Christening and first communion backdrops: white, ivory and soft blue or pink with florals, at home or in the parish hall.
  • Bar and bat mitzvah and sweet 16 backdrops: glam setups with chrome, the honoree's name and lights.
  • Holiday backdrops: winter wonderland and Christmas, Halloween, Valentine's Day, Easter, Mother's Day and Thanksgiving.

Planning

Tips for a Backdrop That Photographs Well

Where you put the backdrop matters more than which one you choose.

  • Keep it away from windows. Backlight turns faces into silhouettes in phone photos. A solid wall behind the backdrop works best.
  • Light the front. A ring light or a soft lamp in front beats the overhead fluorescents in most halls.
  • Give it room. Plan 5–6 feet in front for the table, the guests and the person holding the phone.
  • Measure the ceiling. Check the height before choosing a 7 ft chiara or a 10×10 ft backdrop, especially under drop ceilings and basement beams.
  • Outdoors, block the wind. A backdrop acts like a sail. Outdoor setups get weighted bases and go against a wall or fence, and on open spots like hilltop yards or riverfront patios we plan for gusts.

Questions

Balloon Backdrops in Pittsburgh: FAQ

How much do backdrop balloons cost?

A styled round or chiara backdrop with an organic balloon garland starts at $340. Backdrop rentals alone start at $75 for a panel and $125 for a shimmer wall, and balloon hoop or A-frame backdrops start at $450. Most full setups land between $340 and $700.

How much is a balloon arch with a backdrop?

Most arch-and-backdrop combos cost $420–$700, depending on the garland length, the backdrop surface and extras like marquee numbers or a light-up sign.

How big is a 10×10 ft backdrop?

Ten feet wide by ten feet tall. It needs about 12 feet of wall and a ceiling near 11 feet, so it suits ballrooms, gyms and outdoor setups better than most homes or halls with drop ceilings.

How many balloons are needed for a balloon hoop?

A garland covering a third to half of a 6–7 ft hoop usually takes 60–120 balloons in mixed sizes. A fully wrapped hoop takes more.

Can I rent a backdrop without balloons?

Yes. Shimmer walls, flower walls, boxwood walls and panels rent on their own, and balloons can be added later.

Where should the backdrop go?

Put it against a solid wall, never in front of a window, with 5–6 feet of open floor in front for the table and the photographer. Outside, pick shade and back it against a wall or fence to cut the wind.

Where to get helium balloons in Pittsburgh?

We can add helium bouquets, floating balloons and confetti-filled bubbles to any backdrop, arch or installation order and bring them with the setup. If you only need helium balloons, mention it when you request a quote.

Can you add a name to the backdrop?

Yes. Names, ages and dates go on the panel in custom vinyl, and a light-up sign can hang on the backdrop or inside a balloon hoop.

Tell us the date. We'll build the balloon backdrops.
